Paint Color Consultation in Frederick, MD

Choosing paint colors is easier with someone who has seen how colors behave in real rooms and on real houses. Frederick Painting & Supply offers color consultations for interiors and exteriors across Frederick County and nearby Montgomery County, from a single room to a full exterior color scheme.

We’re a family company, still run by Phil and Shawn Zimmerman, and we’ve been painting homes and businesses in this part of Maryland since 1975.

What We Look At

Light

Natural light changes through the day, and the same color looks different in a north-facing room than in a south-facing one. Bulbs matter too: warm and cool LEDs can shift a color noticeably.

What’s Staying

Floors, countertops, cabinets, stone, brick and roofing won’t change with the paint, so we look for colors whose undertones work with them.

Sheen

Flat finishes hide surface flaws but are harder to clean, while eggshell, satin and semi-gloss are more washable and reflect more light. We’ll recommend a sheen for each surface.

How a Consultation Works

Person comparing paint color cards in front of a house

  • Walkthrough: we look at the rooms or exterior, talk about how you use the space, and note what’s staying.
  • Narrowing options: we suggest a short list of colors that fit the light and the fixed elements.
  • Testing samples: we recommend trying large samples on more than one wall and looking at them at different times of day before deciding.
  • Final choices: we confirm the colors and sheens for each surface before any painting starts.

For exteriors, we also consider the roof, stone or brick, and how colors look in full sun, which can be very different from a small chip.

Exterior Colors and HOA Approval

If your neighborhood has a homeowners association, it may require approval before you change exterior colors. We can provide the exact product names, color codes and sheens for your application and schedule the work once your colors are approved.

Older homes need the same care with color as any other, and if your home was built before 1978, we follow lead-safe practices on the painting itself as an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm.

When a Consultation Helps Most

  • Changing your home’s exterior color rather than repainting the same one.
  • Open floor plans, where colors need to flow from room to room.
  • Painting kitchen or bathroom cabinets.
  • Dark rooms, where the wrong color can make a space feel smaller.
  • Matching paint to new floors, countertops or furniture.

Not sure whether you need one? Ask during your estimate.

Color Help for Every Project

We help with color choices on all of our painting services:

Before Your Consultation

  • Save photos of rooms or houses whose colors you like.
  • Note what’s staying, such as floors, counters, furniture and roofing.
  • Check your HOA’s rules if you’re changing exterior colors.
  • Think about how each room is used, since that affects both color and sheen.

Color Consultation FAQs

Do you offer color consultations outside Urbana?

Yes. We offer them across Frederick County and nearby Montgomery County, for interiors and exteriors.

Do you help with exterior colors as well as interiors?

Yes. For exteriors we also consider the roof, brick or stone, and how colors look in full sun.

Can you help with HOA color approval?

Yes. We can provide the exact product names, color codes and sheens your architectural review committee asks for.

Why should I test paint samples on the wall?

Colors look different in large areas and in your own light than they do on a small chip. Large samples viewed at different times of day help you avoid surprises.

Can you help me choose sheens?

Yes. We recommend a sheen for each surface based on how the room is used and how washable it needs to be.
