Painting Contractor Serving Damascus, MD

If your Damascus exterior is peeling, chalking, or fading faster than you think it should be, you’re not imagining it. Damascus sits on Parr’s Ridge at the top of Montgomery County — between roughly 700 and 870 feet — and paint up here works harder than paint fifteen miles down Route 27.

Frederick Painting & Supply has been repainting homes in this region since 1975. We’re not the closest company to Damascus and we won’t pretend to be. What we bring is fifty years of knowing which coatings hold up in Maryland’s freeze-thaw cycle, and a crew that shows up when it says it will.

Damascus Sits Higher Than the Rest of the County — and Your Paint Knows It

Damascus averages about 21 inches of snow a year. Silver Spring, at the southern end of the same county, averages about 17.5. That gap is a useful shorthand for everything else that comes with elevation: more wind-driven rain, wider temperature swings across a single day, and more freeze-thaw cycles working at every joint and seam on your house.

What that does to a paint film is predictable. Water gets behind trim through failed caulk, freezes, expands, and lifts the coating from the substrate. Repeat that fifty times a winter and you get the peeling you’re looking at now — usually starting at the corners, the window surrounds, and the bottom edge of the siding.

Which is why prep matters more here than it does down-county. Washing off the chalk and mildew, scraping to a sound edge, re-caulking every joint, and spot-priming bare substrate is the part of the job that determines whether you’re back doing this in six years or in twelve.

Siding, Trim, and Shutters on Damascus Homes

Most Damascus subdivisions — Sweepstakes, Damascus Gardens, Greenhills, Mount Radnor Heights, Chesney — went up between the 1970s and the 2000s. That means fairly consistent construction and a fairly consistent set of problems.

Vinyl and Aluminum Siding

Yes, vinyl can be painted, and no, you don’t have to replace it because it’s faded. It does have to be done properly: thorough cleaning, the right bonding primer where needed, and — this is the part people get wrong — a color no darker than the original. Vinyl expands with heat, and a dark colour on siding rated for a light one will buckle. We’ll tell you honestly if the colour you want isn’t safe on your siding.

Aluminum siding takes paint very well and is usually the best value repaint on a Damascus house. Once the chalk is off and it’s properly primed, it holds a finish for a long time.

Wood Trim, Shutters, and Garage Doors

On most homes up here, the trim fails long before the siding does. Fascia, soffit, window surrounds, shutters, and garage and entry doors take the worst of the weather and are the first thing that makes a well-kept house look neglected.

Trim-and-door-only repaints are one of the most common jobs we do in this part of the county, and they’re a fraction of a full exterior painting project.

Decks, Fences, and Railings

Larger lots up here mean more deck, more fence, and more railing than a typical down-county property — and all of it sits fully exposed.

Horizontal deck surfaces are the hardest-wearing paint problem on any property: sun from above, standing water, foot traffic, and snow load. We generally recommend a quality solid-color or semi-transparent stain over paint on deck boards, because stain fails gracefully by fading while paint fails by peeling, and peeled deck paint is a miserable thing to strip.

Everything starts with a proper pressure washing and a full dry-out. Staining a deck that’s still holding moisture is the single most common reason a deck finish fails inside a year.

Interior Repaints — Living In It or Selling It

Two very different jobs, and it’s worth telling us which one you’re doing.

If you’re staying, we’ll work room by room around your schedule, keep the house liveable, and take the time to do trim and ceilings properly. If you’re selling, the priority shifts to neutral colours, whole-house consistency, and getting it done in a tight window before listing photos. Damascus homes tend to sit around 79 days on market — a clean, consistently painted interior is one of the cheaper things that shortens that.

Either way, interior painting here usually includes some wall repair. Twenty-year-old drywall in a family home has picture holes, corner dings, and the occasional settlement crack, and we fill and sand as part of the work rather than as an extra.

When We Can Get Damascus Exteriors on the Schedule

The exterior season up here is genuinely shorter than it is in Frederick or down-county — you lose time at both ends to overnight temperatures and morning moisture. Practically, that means our best Damascus exterior slots fill early, and the homeowners who call in February get the spring dates.

If your exterior is failing now and you’re reading this in autumn, it’s still worth calling. We can often get prep and repairs done in shoulder season and hold the finish coats for the first reliable window, which stops the damage getting worse over winter.

Call 301-473-4773 or tell us about your project and we’ll give you a realistic date, not an optimistic one.

A 50-Year-Old Company, Not a Crew of the Month

Phil Zimmerman started this company in 1975. His son Shawn joined in 1991, and between them they’ve got over eight decades in the trade. We’re a member of the Painting Contractors Association, an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm, and fully insured — and our employees are our own, trained and accountable, not day labour assembled per job.

That matters in a market like Damascus, where a lot of contractors come and go. If something’s wrong with our work in five years, we’ll still be here. You can read more about how the company started if you’re curious.

Common Questions From Damascus Homeowners

How often do exteriors need repainting in Damascus compared to lower parts of the county?

Expect a somewhat shorter interval than a comparable house at lower elevation, mostly because of freeze-thaw and wind exposure. The bigger variable is how well the last job was prepped — a well-prepped exterior up here will outlast a poorly prepped one anywhere.

Can vinyl siding be painted, or does it have to be replaced?

It can be painted. It needs thorough cleaning, the right primer, and a colour no darker than the original, since dark colours can cause vinyl to warp. We’ll check what your siding can safely take before recommending a colour.

How late in the fall can you still paint the outside of a house here?

It depends on the product and the overnight lows more than the calendar. Modern coatings extend the season, but at Damascus elevation we’re generally cautious once nights drop consistently. We’d rather push finish coats to spring than apply them into conditions that will cost you adhesion.

Do you stain decks and fences, or only paint houses?

We do decks, fences, and railings — cleaning, prep, and stain or paint depending on the surface and how it’s been finished before.

How long does a whole-house interior repaint usually take?

For a typical Damascus colonial, plan on roughly a week of working days including prep and wall repair, though it varies with square footage, ceiling heights, and how much trim work is involved. We’ll give you a firm range in the written estimate.
